something terrible has happened

"That's compared to like earthquakes in the Far East or testicular cancer?" - Spike, Notting Hill

Okay so it's not THAT terrible, but it's unfortunate. My portable cd player died sometime overnight. Yes yes I still use cd players and not those new fangled mp3 devices. Though this recent development has me reconsidering jumping into the 21st century. I can't say that I will as budgetary constraints may force me to hang on to cd players like hippies hold on to the 8-track, but we shall see. My mom suggested asking for one for Christmas (as if anyone buying me presents has any money either), but this is a purchase that must be made before flying home as the noise of the airplane will certainly drive me insane without music to halfway sort of not really drown it out. And that's all for my explanation of the terrible thing that happened that really isn't so bad.

Happy hump day everyone! And I bet you thought I forgot again. ;P

One day at the gym, I saw someone accidently step on their MP3 player smashing the case. The lady picked it up and was about to throw it in the trash when I asked her if I could keep it. A little super glue and it's all better! The little bugger has served me well ever since.

Now those new nano's....I might have to retire old faithful for one of those.

hmm... shuffles are pretty cheap.

You do like notting hill, a lot. What's the draw? I mean, I liked it. But you quote it.

Two things:

I looooove Spike in Notting Hill!!!!!! When I was in London I rode the tube from the Notting Hill station and I was just giggling to myself like an insane freak.

Buy an iPod shuffle. You can get them for $100 or $130 (approximately) and they're super cool. I have one and love it. The more expensive one holds about 12 hours of music.

Oy, I have to weigh in - buy anything but an iPod! Well, if you think an iPod is the best value, buy it. But there's currently a class-action lawsuit about the nanos because of the screens getting all scratched up (which apparently Apple knew about but released them anyway). And my only other comment is this - mp3 players do not have to cost as much as iPods cost.

And I don't mean to alienate anyone else who has posted in favor of iPods. If you think I'm crazy, that's fine too, because by and large, I am.

I would be happy to settle for someone else's old discarded unloved iPod. Shuffles are cheap, but I dislike the lack of a screen.

Notting Hill is quite a great movie. I quote it because it amuses me. :) "Happiness isn't happiness without a violin playing goat." It's just good stuff.

Amber, I really don't know what the best value is, but it does seem that Apple has cornered this market & there has to be some reason behind that. I really don't understand this nano lawsuit. First of all of course the screen is going to get scratched. My new cell phone was scratched within a week, it just happens. Do they scratch so badly that you can no longer read it? If that's true I don't know how. And if this was such a huge problem that Apple knew about why didn't they use the same screens other iPods have? I haven't heard of any troubles with those screens. I just don't get it. I would agree that mp3 players don't have to cost as much as iPods, but I'm guessing that their interface is probably easier than some others. I don't know I haven't really researched it yet, but I'm not going to want to install an additional program if I get some other kind of player. There are a lot of factors to consider, though price may in fact lead me to purchase another cd player. We shall see.

The debate may be over before it barely started. I like this and it's within my price range. It keeps me in the musical dark ages, but I think I can live with that. Plus there's just something about cds. Other than that they're more cumbersome than their digital counterparts. There's something about creating a mix that has to fit in a certain amount of time. Playlists aren't quite the same. So for now I think I shall be content to linger behind the trend. I shall catch up eventually, probably when everyone else has moved on to having a chip implanted in their brain through which they can download music and access the radio. Scary.

I don't mean to be a spoilsport and all, but if it plays mp3 CD's you can effectively put the equivalent music of a shuffle on each CD. You can carry ten CDs around and when people laugh, you can say, "They're not mixes. They're shuffles." And you'll feel very cool I'm sure.

But it does sort of do away with the whole 70 minute thing. Which I too enjoy the challenge of. But now that I have a shuffle, I autofill an awful lot.

I don't think you're a spoilsport. The cd player I have now plays mp3 cds or at least it used to. I very rarely burn mp3 cds because it is quite difficult to make a great mix that lasts several hours. 70 minutes is a challenge because it limits you but it is a manageable amount of time. I won't be making any purchases for another month, so there's still plenty of time to research and decide what I want to do.

And umm I always feel cool. ;)
